The
Idaho Department of Environmental Quality is responsible for the management and protection of Idaho's environmental resources (water quality, air quality, and waste management and remediation) as established by the state law, regulation, and policy. DEQ manages a broad range of activities, including environmental problem assessment; oversight of facilities that generate air, water, and hazardous waste pollution; air and water quality monitoring; clean-up of contaminated sites; and providing education, outreach, and technical assistance to businesses, local government agencies, and interested citizens. The GIS staff support DEQ’s mission to manage and protect Idaho’s environmental resources by generating, maintaining and analyzing the spatial components of DEQ’s data. These data are typically organized into one of three broad categories: Air, Water, & Waste. The air quality spatial data are generated from air quality monitoring and data collection locations. DEQ routinely assesses outdoor (ambient) air quality throughout the state to satisfy federal regulatory requirements and scientifically determine the status of Idaho's air quality. Water quality data is often associated with the creation and implementation of Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) and the Clean Water Act, ground water protection and remediation, drinking water management and loan programs, and waste water permitting and loan programs. Waste spatial data is associated with the management and remediation of waste with in the State of Idaho.
