How are Landsat data spatially organized?

Landsat scenes are mapped to a global notation system called the Worldwide Reference System (WRS), annotating the nominal scene center of Landsat imagery using Path and Row designators.  This reference system catalogues the worlds landmass into 57,784 scenes.  Each scenes footprint is approximately 115 miles (183 kilometers) wide by 106 miles (170 kilometers) long.  There are 26 scenes that cover areas in Idaho with adjoining scenes having overlapping areas.

The scenes are organized by WRS Path/Row--for example, Path42/Row28.  The path is the orbit of the satellite and the intersection of a Path/Row represents the center of a scene.

How do I share Landsat data?

All agencies, organizations, and individuals who have purchased Landsat imagery for Idaho are welcome to have the imagery listed on this site.  Contributors may share images one of the following two ways:

  1. Provide contact information so that persons interested in the imagery may contact you via email for a copy of the data.
  2. Archive your imagery on CD-ROM at the University of Idaho Library so that persons interested in the imagery may request a copy of the CD-ROM from the University of Idaho Library.

If you would like to have persons interested in the imagery contact you directly, send an email to Bruce Godfrey (bgodfrey@uidaho.edu) that includes the following:

  1. Your name
  2. Your address
  3. Your phone number
  4. Your email address
  5. The scene path
  6. The scene row
  7. The image acquisition date
  8. The correction level
  9. The product type that you ordered (Example: W84 UTM 30 NN N MAP N GEO).  Click here for details from USGS.

If you would like to have an image archived on CD-ROM at the University of Idaho Library, send an email to Bruce Godfrey (bgodfrey@uidaho.edu) for further details on how to transfer the data.

How do I request a CD-ROM from the UI Library?

You may request a copy of a CD-ROM from the UI Library either of the following ways:

Library Reserve:

If you are on campus, you may check out the CD-ROMs from the UI Library CD-ROM collection.  Present the Call Number (For example: CD-ROM Docs. I19.120:L23/7x/P42/R30/20000727) to staff at the Library Reserve desk on the first floor of the Library to obtain the CD-ROM.

INSIDE Idaho:

If you are off campus and would like to request 5 CD's or fewer, contact INSIDE Idaho by email or phone (see below).  INSIDE Idaho will duplicate the CD-ROMs and mail them to you.  Use the Call Numbers provided for the images you are interested in (For example: CD-ROM Docs. I19.120:L23/7x/P42/R30/20000727).  Currently there is no charge for this service.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL):

If you are off campus and would like to make a bulk request (6 CD's or more), contact Interlibrary Loan by e-mail (libill@uidaho.edu).  ILL will gather the CD-ROMs from reserve and mail them to you.  Use the Call Numbers provided for the images you are interested in (For example: CD-ROM Docs. I19.120:L23/7x/P42/R30/20000727).  The CD-ROMs must be returned via UPS within 14 days, and requesting parties are responsible for the shipping costs.

What is EarthExplorer and how do I use it to get metadata?

EarthExplorer is a USGS Web site which allows searches across multiple USGS maintained data sets. These data sets include Landsat imagery.

Here is brief tutorial on using EarthExplorer to get metadata for a Landsat image.  It may be helpful to print these steps out.

  1. Navigate to the EarthExplorer Web site.

    • Click here to launch EarthExplorer in a new browser window

    • Click here to launch EarthExplorer in the current browser window

  2. Click on the "Guest" icon to enter as a guest.  (Grant JavaScript/Java Applet access if a message box pops up).

  3. In the "Data Set Selection" area, select the box next to the Landsat data type you want to find.

  4. Click "Continue" at the bottom of the page.

  5. Scroll down and enter the "Entity ID" in the "Entity ID" area.  (This number is presented to you after you click on the "Read" icon of the "Metadata" column associated with any image).

  6. Click "Search" at the bottom of the page.

  7. Click on the Landsat data hyperlink in the "Data Set" column.

  8. Now, if you click on the "Show" icon in the "Show All Fields" column, you can view attribute information for the image.  There is a link at the bottom for metadata in FGDC format.
