[1] As reported by the U.S. General Services Administration, 1988. Includes land administered by the U.S. Department of Defense for defense purposes (18.8 million acres) and land administered by the U.S. Department of Energy (2.1 million acres).
[2] Estimates calculated on the basis of state-by-state number of farms and acreage of unclassified land in farms.
[3] Areas in national and state park systems and national forest wilderness and primitive areas. Generally excludes parks in urban places and large water bodies. Based on data from reports and records of the National Park Service, Forest Service, and state agencies.
[4] Includes rural highways and roads, railroads, and airports. Estimates for highways were derived by applying average right-of-way widths to the mileage of different highway systems reported by the Federal Highway Administration. Estimates of acreage in railroad rights-of-way are based on state-by-state changes in mileage reported by the Interstate Commerce Commission. Estimates of acreage in airports based on information supplied by the Federal Aviation Administration. Excludes active airports used strictly for personal or military use.
[5] Areas administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and state wildlife agencies. Does not include federal areas under the primary jurisdiction of another agency or areas leased for wildlife purposes. Data on federal areas are from reports and records of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. State estimates mainly are acreages compiled by the Council on Environmental Quality updated through 1986 with acreages acquired through the Dingell-Johnson and Pittman-Robertson programs of federal assistance.
