Application

This tutorial topic illustrates how to open and view a GIS data set.  Following step-by-step instructions, you will open a theme and make it visible using ArcExplorer 2.0.

Now that you have decompressed a file, you are ready to open it in ArcExplorer 2.0.

If you have not decompressed a file click here.

Step 1. Launch Arc Explorer 2.0

If you used the defaults during installation go to:

       Start > Programs > ESRI > ArcExplorer 2.0 > ArcExplorer

Step 2. Open the file

Note: this process will work ArcExplorer 2.0 data type in any directory--the ones used below are just examples.

  • Go to Theme > Add Theme as shown here:

arcexplorer.jpg (19237 bytes)

  • Navigate to the directory where the data are.

    In this case:
    C:\downloads\data\uncompress\

  • Double click on the file you wish to open.

In this case:
democnty_id_esri.shp

Your ArcExplorer window should look like this:

arcexplorer2.jpg (15177 bytes)

Step 3.  Make the theme visible

  • Click the checkbox next to the file name

In this case:
DEMOCNTY...  It's right under the word "Local" on the left side of the window.

Now, your window should look like this:

arcexplorer3.jpg (17333 bytes)

You have successfully opened a file (also referred to as adding a theme) with ArcExplorer 2.0 -- Nice work!

From this point, there are numerous things you can do to explore the data.  You will need to read the help files and the Users Guide in order to expose all the functionality of ArcExplorer 2.0.  Don't be afraid to experiment.  You probably won't break your computer and if you end up corrupting your data set you can always download a new copy and decompress it again.

That concludes the tutorial.  If you have any remaining questions about the site, see the FAQ page or email one of the INSIDE Idaho Contacts.

Good Luck!
