This tutorial topic outlines
how to download a GIS data set using either Internet Explorer or Netscape. You will
download a GIS data set following step-by-step instructions.

This tutorial topic is written for Windows users (95/98/Me/NT/2000).
The basic steps are as follows:
- Locate a data set you wish to download
- Initiate the download
- Choose a location on your machine to save the file to
For this tutorial topic, you will have two web browser windows open--one to follow the
steps of the tutorial and one to navigate to a data set to download. You will be
prompted to open a second web browser shortly.
Step 1: Locate a data set of
interest
To locate a data set, first click here
to open a new browser window to the INSIDE Idaho Home Page. Now, in the new browser
window you just opened:
- Click the GeoData link then
- Click the Find Data link then
- Click the Browse link
Then, select an item from one of the drop-down boxes to filter the
records returned. You will be presented with a list of items that
meet the criteria selected in the drop-down list(s).

Now, choose a data set to download.
From the drop-down "Choose Content Type" select
"Downloadable GIS Data"
Step 2: Initiate the download
First, place your mouse pointer over the "Download" icon for the data set
Now left-click with the mouse on the "Download" icon for
the first item in the table..
Step 3: Choose a location on you
machine to save the file to
A small window will popup. The wording is slightly different depending on which
browser you are using.
- For Internet Explorer select the radio button for "Save this file to disk"
- For Netscape select the radio button for "Save it to disk"
Navigate to the folder of your choice and click the Save button.
The remaining tutorial topics will assume that you have saved the file to the location:
C:\downloads\data\compress\
but the file could be on any drive, in any folder.
Depending on how fast your connection is this download may take a few seconds or
several minutes to complete. When the download is complete click "Close".
Navigate to that directory to make sure the file is there using "My Computer"
or "Windows Explorer".
